pancreatitis dogs

In an earlier post, I wrote that my dog had pancreatitis. Symptoms were: he vomited everything he ate or drank, he quit eating even giving up his favorite dog bisquits, he laid around and didn’t act normal, dehydration. His stomach hurt and was sensitive, he laid around like he was gong to die. He had eaten a whole pack of pepperoni. I took him to the vet. I didn’t know he was this bad off. I didn’t think he’d die but he did.

Pancreatitis causes in dogs: high fat diet, certain medication, predisposition, overweight, fatty foods …. for instance if the dog eats too much fat at one time its too much for the pancreas to handle. It becomes inflamed and can over produce digestive juices - if left untreated it will digest the organs around it.

dogs treatment: several days without anything by mouth - no water, no food - to let the Pancreas rest - You will have to take the dog to the vet in order to get liquids into him cause he will dehydrate if he hasn’t already. The vet can give your dog pain killers cause this ailment is extremely painful. He will give him antibiotics and something for nausea. If your dog does survive, you will have to feed him a bland diet afterwards like plain rice, boiiled chicken without grease. You will also have to give him antibiotic pills cause the risk of infection is extremely high. Then, after he recovers, you will have to watch his food intake. Its best not to give your dog table scraps. A low fat diet dog food is best. Anyway, my dog died yesterday from pancreatitis. I thought he was getting better. The vet told me Saturday to start trying to feed him. However, he didn’t want to eat or drink anything. He just wanted to be left alone. I layed around and wouldnot move. When he did get up, he walked sideways, staggering and fell back down. Just before he died, he bled out his nose and mouth before he died.

dog pancreatis

My dog, buddy, is a beagle. He will eat anything and everything like there is no tomorrow. He was 53 lbs. which is over double his normal weight. My grown children live with me and so do my grandchildren. I have been preaching to them forever about leaving food around to no avail. Anyway, I left the house Sunday when my granddaughter gave Buddy a whole pack of pepperoni. He immediately got sick. Vomited all over the place. He stopped eating. When he drank water, he just threw it up. I thought he just had a belly ache. But, after 3 days, I knew I had to take him to the vet. So, I took him. The Vet said it was pancreatis. My dog was in a lot of pain. The Vet said that his pancreatis was inflamed because it couldn’t process that much fat at one time. So, since I was limited on funds, the vet ran a test to make sure, it cost $53.00. The exam was $46.00. All and all, it cost $207.00. He gave Buddy a pain reliever shot, gave him some the belly ache and instead of an IV, he put water under Buddy’s skin to be absorbed into the body. He cant eat or drink anything at all (vet’s orders) Buddy was very dehydrated. Anyway, that was yesterday. I had to take him back today for more water under the skin, another pain shot and stomach ache medicine. He’s feeling better but he’s not over it yet. The vet said he still could die. I have to take him back tomorrow when the vet will try and get him to eat something bland like rice. The good news from this experience is that Buddy lost 13 lbs.

dog health checkup

I had been putting off taking my dogs to the vet simply cause I didn’t have the money to do so. It costs over $100.00 every time I take them cause I am paying for two. I have to have their nails trimmed every 2 or 3 months, then I have their anal glands expressed - Vet says this is necessary. The anal glands fill up and become very uncomfortable for the dog and this is what makes the dog scoot his hind end on your carpet. Then the other expenses are shots like rabies, bordella, distemper, parvo and other vacine shots - that is if they need them. Rabies is usually given every 3 years. Anyway, add a flea medication such as frontline and heartworm medication such as heartguard. Throw in a bath and its well over $300.00 for 2 dogs. ouch!
